About Heathcote State Forest

Heathcote State Forest, located in Somerset County, New Jersey, covers over 2,500 acres of forested hills, wetlands, and small streams. The forest features a mix of hardwood trees such as oak, maple, and hickory alongside pockets of pine, supporting a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous bird species. The terrain ranges from gentle slopes to more rugged ridges, providing scenic viewpoints along popular trails. Historically, the area was once farmed and later reforested under state management starting in the early 20th century. Today, the forest functions as a public recreational space managed by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry. Visitors enjoy hiking and mountain biking on over 22 miles of multi-use trails, with several loops connecting to neighboring wildlife management areas. Fishing opportunities exist in small creeks, and birdwatching is notable during migration seasons. The forest also features remnants of old stone walls and foundations hinting at its agrarian past. Its proximity to suburban communities makes it a convenient natural retreat offering peaceful outdoor activities, educational programs, and nature photography. Heathcote State Forest is valued for both its recreational access and its role in protecting local ecosystems and watershed resources.
